AP Environmental Science

AP Environmental Science (APES) can suit students who are curious about ecosystems, sustainability, and the environmental challenges people face. What you will learn

AP Environmental Science explores how natural systems work and how people affect them. Students study ecology, sustainability, natural resources, and global environmental issues. The course connects scientific ideas to real-world questions and includes hands-on learning.

Students also prepare for the AP Environmental Science Exam. It includes multiple-choice and free-response questions and receives a score from 1 to 5. Some colleges award credit for qualifying scores, but policies vary, so families should check with the colleges their student may consider.

Workload and prerequisites

APES is a college-level course, so students should expect regular study, scientific vocabulary, and practice interpreting information and explaining conclusions. Hands-on activities are part of the learning. The course may feel demanding for a student who has several other major commitments or prefers not to spend time reviewing science outside class.

SAA’s AP program has open enrollment, so students aren’t screened out of AP courses through a selective application process. That doesn’t mean every AP class will feel right for every student. Ask the academic registrar about recommended preparation, scheduling, and the expected workload for the current school year.

SAA offers eight AP courses across math, science, history, and English. Its program is recognized at the Platinum level, and classes are small, with about 10 students per teacher.
