AP Biology gives students a college-level look at life science, from cells and genetics to ecology and evolution. At Sacramento Adventist Academy, a private Pre-K through 12 Christian school in Carmichael, CA, the course includes hands-on lab work. It may suit students who enjoy science and are ready to manage a demanding class, but families should weigh the workload and their student’s interests before deciding.
Students explore how living things work and interact. Topics include cellular processes, genetics, evolution, ecology, and relationships among organisms and their environments. Inquiry-based labs give students a chance to investigate questions, study cellular structures, and analyze ecological systems while building scientific reasoning and critical-thinking skills.
At the end of the course, students can take the AP Biology Exam. It includes multiple-choice and free-response sections and receives a score from 1 to 5. A score of 3 or higher may earn college credit at many universities, though credit policies vary by school.
AP Biology covers college-level material, so students should expect regular study alongside classwork and lab activities.
