For SAA sophomore Keilana Rivas, cross-country was more than just a race; it was a testimony of perseverance, integrity, and spiritual dedication.
Keilana made school history by qualifying for the California state championship cross-country race, an incredible achievement in itself. But what set her journey apart was the unwavering commitment to her faith. Many qualifying meets were scheduled on the Sabbath, presenting a difficult decision for any athlete. Instead of compromising her beliefs, Keilana chose to honor God, running her races on Fridays—even if it meant competing alone.
Despite the challenge of running without the energy of a full race pack, she still placed high enough to advance. Then, just a week before the state championship, another obstacle: a tough cold threatened to slow her down. But true to her determined spirit, Keilana pushed forward, running with grit and purpose. At the finish line, she wasn’t just met with cheers from family, friends, and race officials—she was awarded a citizenship medal, recognizing not just her athletic talent, but her sportsmanship and unwavering faith.
Keilana’s journey perfectly embodies two of SAA’s Schoolwide Learner Outcomes (SLOs):
Keilana Rivas’ story reminds us all that sports are about more than just winning—they’re about the journey, the character it builds, and the purpose behind each step.
