Why Open Enrollment for AP Courses?

AP courses are often thought of as classes for the “top students,” but at SAA, we see them differently. Open enrollment allows students from diverse academic backgrounds to take on the challenge of AP coursework. In fact, SAA has been recognized as a Platinum with Access school, in part, because we allow open enrollment. here’s why we embrace this approach:

  1. Opportunity for Growth
We believe that students rise to the level of expectations set for them. By opening our AP courses to all, we provide every student with the chance to stretch their abilities, build resilience, and discover new strengths.
  2. Personalized Support
At SAA, our small class sizes and dedicated teachers ensure that every student gets the guidance they need to succeed. Open enrollment works because we meet students where they are, helping them navigate the challenges of AP coursework with confidence.
  3. Faith in Potential
Our mission as a faith-based school is to nurture the whole student. Open enrollment reflects our belief that every student has God-given potential and deserves the opportunity to grow academically, spiritually, and personally.

Who Thrives in AP Courses at SAA?

AP courses are challenging by design, but with the right mindset and support, a wide range of students can thrive. Here’s what it takes to succeed in AP classes at SAA:

  • A Growth Mindset
Students who are willing to put in the effort, learn from setbacks, and stay motivated will excel in AP coursework. It’s not about being the “smartest”—it’s about being committed to growth.
  • Strong Time-Management Skills
Balancing AP classes with other commitments requires planning and discipline. Students who thrive are those who can prioritize tasks and stay organized.
  • Curiosity and Passion
Whether it’s diving into the intricacies of literature in AP English or solving real-world problems in AP Environmental Science, students who are genuinely curious about learning will get the most out of their AP experience.
  • Supportive Community
Students at SAA have access to a network of teachers, counselors, and peers who encourage and uplift one another. This collaborative environment helps all students thrive, even in challenging courses.

The Difference Between Passing the AP Test and Earning High School Credit

One of the most common questions about AP courses is this: What’s the difference between passing the AP exam and getting credit for the class? At SAA, we make this distinction clear to ensure students and families understand the benefits of both.

  • High School Credit
    • What It Means: Students earn high school credit simply by completing the AP course with a passing grade, demonstrating they’ve engaged with college-level material.
    • Why It’s Valuable: Even if a student doesn’t pass the AP exam, the skills and knowledge they gain from the class prepare them for future academic challenges.
  • AP Test Scores
    • What It Means: AP tests, scored on a scale of 1 to 5, determine whether a student earns college credit for the course. Many colleges accept scores of 3 or higher, but policies vary.
    • Why It’s Valuable: Passing the AP test can save money on tuition and allow students to skip introductory college courses.

At SAA, we emphasize that success in an AP course is not solely defined by an exam score. Every student who takes on the challenge of AP coursework grows in skills, confidence, and readiness for the future.

Why Open Enrollment Works at SAA

Open enrollment for AP courses wouldn’t work without the support and dedication of our teachers, counselors, and community. Here’s how we make it successful:

  • Individualized Attention: Small class sizes allow teachers to provide personalized feedback and support.
  • Encouragement and Flexibility: Our teachers work closely with students to address their unique challenges and celebrate their victories.
  • Balanced Expectations: We recognize that not every student will pass the AP exam, and that’s okay. The journey itself is valuable, and earning high school credit is an achievement worth celebrating.

Qualifications for Enrollment

Certainly applicants aren’t limited by GPA or grade requirements but there are still policies in place to help students succeed:

  • Application & Essay: All AP applicants must apply for the course and write an essay explaining why they want to take that AP course.
  • Prerequisites: Just as it is with any other course, applicants will not qualify for an AP course if they don’t have the prerequisite classwork.  For example, an applicant for AP Calculus AB will not qualify without taking foundational math courses that provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to do well in AP Calculus AB.
  • Course Schedule: The natural schedule for all classes may prevent a student from being able to take an AP course due to a schedule conflict.
  • AP Quantity: It is possible to be overtasked.  For that reason, SAA may limit the number of AP courses that a student can take per year.
